Avant-Garde or Unwearable? The London Debate
by Anderson K.
April 30, 2026
Paris has the couture heritage, Milan has the luxury leather goods, and New York has the commercial sportswear. But London? London has the madness.
London Fashion Week (LFW) has long been regarded as the rebellious younger sibling of the "Big Four." It is the birthplace of punk, the home of Central Saint Martins, and the city where designers like Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood cut their teeth. But this season, a familiar question echoed through the front rows and Instagram comment sections alike: *Is this genius avant-garde art, or is it just completely unwearable?*
This year's runways were dominated by silhouettes that challenged the very laws of physics. We saw inflatable latex dresses that doubled the width of the models, face-obscuring masks made of upcycled technological waste, and footwear that looked more like architectural scaffolding than shoes.
Critics argue that fashion, by definition, must function as clothing. If you cannot sit down, fit through a door frame, or see where you are walking, have we crossed the line into performance art?
